Sankrit rátna (99)

According to Monier-Williams’ A Sanskrit-English Dictionary, the word rátna refers to “a gift, present, goods, wealth, riches; a jewel, gem, treasure, precious stone (the nine jewels are Pearl, Ruby, Topaz, Diamond, Emerald, Lapis Lazuli, Coral, Sapphire, and Gomeda); a magnet, loadstone; water.” It is related to the Sanskrit root , meaning “to grant, give, bestow, impart, yield, surrender.” However, it derives from the Tamil root ar, embodying its luminous connotation, as it evolves through the transformation of ar > rátna.
