Pali ratana (7)

According to Davids and Stede’s Pali-English Dictionary, Pali word ratana means “a gem, jewel, and treasure.” It is linguistically related to Sanskrit ratna and Buddhist Sanskrit ratna. It traces its origin to the Tamil root ar through the transformation of ar > rátna > ratana. The following words, related to Pali ratana, also originate from Tamil ar.

ratana-ākara, a pearl-mine, a mine of precious metals. ratana-kūṭa, a jewelled top. ratana-paliveṭhana, a wrapper for a gem or jewel. ratana-vara, the best of gems. ratana-sutta, the Suttanta of the three Treasures (viz. Dhamma, Sangha, Buddha), representing Sutta Nipāta. ratanaka, characteristic of a gem, or a king's treasure.
