Pali kūpa (9)
According to Davids and Stede’s Pali-English Dictionary, Pali word kūpa means “a pit and a cavity.” It shares an etymological relationship with Vedic kūpa, Latin cupa, Greek κύπελλον (kýpellon), κύμβη (kýmvi), and Sanskrit kumbha. It is an offshoot of the Tamil root kappal through the transformation of kappal > kūpa > kūpa. The following words, related to Pali kūpa, also originate from Tamil kappu.
akkhikūpa, “the socket of the eye.” gūthakūpa, “a cesspool.” miḷhakūpa, “a pit for evacuations.” lomakūpa, “the root of the hair, a pore of the skin.” vaccakūpa, “equal to gūthakūpa.” kūpa-khaṇa, “one who digs a pit.” kūpa-tala, “the floor of a pit.” kūpaka, “equal to kūpa.”
