Sinhalese aruṇa (4)

According to Clough’s Sinhala English Dictionary, Sinhalese word aruṇa means “sun; charioteer of the sun; dawn of day; the colour of dawn; dark red or mixture of red and black; redness of sunset; name of the bitter apple (colocynth); the plant that yields the red and black berry from which the jeweller’s weight, the retti, is derived.” It traces its origin to the Tamil root ar through the transformation of ar > aruṇá > aruṇa. The following words, related to Sinhalese aruṇa, also originate from Tamil ar.

aruṇaprabhá, dawn of day. aruṇawanta, of a light red colour; of a kind of red colour. aruṇuwan, the colour of the dawn or dark red.
