According to Monier-Williams’ A Sanskrit-English Dictionary, Sanskrit word róhita means “red, reddish, a red or chestnut horse, blood, and saffron.” It also refers to “a kind of deer, a kind of tree, Andersonia rohitaka, and a sort of ornament made of precious stones.” It traces its origin to Tamil ar through the transformation of ar > ru > rudh/ruh > rohita.
