Sanskrit rudhira (24)

According to Monier-Williams’ A Sanskrit-English Dictionary, Sanskrit word rudhira is derived from the lost root rudh, meaning “to be red.” It refers to “red, blood-red, bloody; the blood red planet or Mars; a kind of precious stone; blood; and saffron.” It is linguistically related to terms in other Indo-European languages, such as Greek ἐρυθρός (erythrós); Latin ruber, rubeo, rufus; Lithuanian rùdas, raùdas, raudónas; Slavonic rŭdrŭ, rŭdĕti; Gothic rauths; Anglo-Saxon reȧd; English red; and German rôt, rot. It traces its origin to the Tamil root ar through the transformation of ar > ru > rudh > rudhira. The following words, related to Sanskrit rudhira, also originate from the Tamil root ar.
