    According to Monier-Williams’ A Sanskrit-English Dictionary, rakta refers to “coloured, dyed, painted; reddened, red, crimson; red colour; safflower; of the planet Mars; name of one of the 7 tongues of fire; blood; the menstrual fluid; the fruit of Flacourtia cataphracta.” It traces its origin to the Tamil root ar through the transformation of ar > ra > rañj > rakta.
