Sanskrit rāga (24)

    According to Monier-Williams’ A Sanskrit-English Dictionary, Sanskrit word rāga refers to “the act of colouring or dyeing; colour, hue, tint, dye, red colour, redness; inflammation; a particular process in the preparation of quicksilver; seasoning, condiment; the sun; the moon; Eleusinc coracana; name of the second daughter of Aṅgiras; and Eleusine coracana.” It traces its origin to the Tamil root ar through the transformation of ar > ra > rañj > rāga. The following words, related to Sanskrit rāga also originate from Tamil ar.
