Pali rāga (13)

   According to Davids and Stede’s Pali-English Dictionary, Pali word rāga means “colour, hue; colouring, and dye.” It traces its origin to the Tamil root ar through the transformation of ar > ra > rañj > rāga. The following words, related to Pali rāga, also originate from Tamil ar.

rāga-aggi, the fire of passion. rāga-ussada, conceit of lust. rāga-kkhaya, the decay (waning) of passion. rāga-carita, one whose habit is passion, of passionate behaviour. rāga-ṭṭhānīya, founded on passion. rāga-patha, way of lust, lustfulness, passion, sensuality. rāga-rati, passionate or lustful delight. rāga-ratta,  affected with passion. anga-rāga, painting or rouging the body. paduma-rāga, lotus hued. parirañjita, dyed, coloured. anurañjita, illumined, brighterted, beautified.
