Sinhalese ruchi (2)

     Clough’s Sinhala English Dictionary says Sinhalese word ruchi means “light, lustre; beauty; passion; wish, desire; ray of light; intent application to any object or undertaking; hunger, appetite; wishful, desirous, and having appetite.” It traces its origin to the Tamil root el through the transformation of el > er > ru > ruchi. The following word, related to Sinhalese ruchi, also originates from Tamil el.

róchana, “describes things as beautiful, splendid, irradiating, illumining, and beautifying. It can also connote the idea of whetting or sharpening, especially in relation to appetite stimulation.”
