According to Monier-Williams' A Sanskrit-English Dictionary, Sanskrit word sūrya means “the sun or its deity.” It traces its origin to the Tamil root el through the transformation of el > sūrya. The following words, related to Sanskrit sūrya, also originate from Tamil el.
