Pali suriya (13)
According to Davids and Stede’s Pali-English Dictionary, Pali word suriya means “the sun and the sun as a god.” It is linguistically related to Sanskrit sūrya; Indo-Germanic *sāṷel; Greek η῞λιος (ilios); Latin sōl; Gothic sauil (sun); and Old-Irish sūil (eye). It traces its origin to the Tamil root el through the transformation of el > sūrya > suriya. The following words, related to Pali suriya, also originate from Tamil el.
suriya-atthangamana, “sunset.” suriya-uggamana, “sunrise.” suriya-kanta, “the sun-gem, a kind of gem.” suriya-ggāha, “eclipse of the sun.” suriya-maṇḍala, “the orb of the sun.” suriya-rasmi, “a sunbeam.” suriya-vattika, “a sun-worshipper.” sūra, “the sun.” ussūra, “sun-out, the sun being out.” ussūra-bhatta, “eating after mid-day, unpunctual meals.” ussūra-seyyā, “sleep after sunrise, sleeping late.” ussūre, “the sun having been up (for a long time).”
