     According to Davids and Stede’s Pali-English Dictionary, Pali word khara denotes “rough, hard, sharp, and painful.” It traces its origin to the Tamil root kaṭu (sharpness) through the transformation of kaṭu (sharpness) > kar > khára > khara. The following words, related to Pali khara, also originate from the Tamil root kaṭu (sharpness).

khara-putta, “nickname of a horse.” khara-âjina, “a rough skin, as garment of an ascetic.” khara-gata, “of rough constitution.” khara-mukha, “a conch.” khara-ssara, “of rough sound.” kharatta, “roughness.”
