Turner’s A Comparative Dictionary of the Indo-Aryan Languages says Sanskrit word áśri means “sharp side, corner, angle, and edge.” Further, he provides the cognates of áśri in East other Indo-European languages:
Pali aṁsi-; Prakrit aṁsi-, assi-; Panjābī assī; Oṛiyā ā̃siā;
Sinhalese äs, ähä; Prasun čū.
áśri transforms into aśra in certain compound forms. In such cases, the cognate forms vary as follows:
Pali assa-; Sinhalese asa, ahak.
