Sanskrit rátha (123)
According to Monier-Williams’ A Sanskrit-English Dictionary, Sanskrit word rátha denotes “goer, a chariot, car, especially a two-wheeled war-chariot, any vehicle or equipage or carriage (applied also to the vehicles of the gods), waggon, and cart.” The word rátha is derived from the root ṛi, meaning “to go, move, rise, tend upwards; to go towards, meet with, fall upon or into, reach, obtain; to fall to one’s share, occur, befall; to advance towards a foe, attack, invade; to hurt, offend; to move, excite, erect, and raise.” It traces its origin to the Tamil root uruḷ through the transformation of uruḷ > ṛi > rátha.
