Sinhalese karkaṣa (11)

     Clough’s Sinhala English Dictionary says Sinhalese word karkaṣa means “harsh, rude, violent, unfeeling, unkind, and unmerciful.” It traces its origin to the Tamil root kaṭu (strength) through the transformation of kaṭu (strength) > kar > karkaṡa > karkaṣa. The following words, related to Sinhalese karkaṣa, also originate from Tamil kaṭu (strength).

karahu and karaho, “hard.” karaḷu, “hard.” kakuḷuwá, “crab.” kakuḷu-suṇ, “(crab, ṣṛiṅga horn or claw of the crab) a plant, fruit of which is compared to the claw or feeler of a crab.” kakuḷu-rẹsa, “fourth sign of the Indian zodiac, Cancer, or the crab.” karkaṭa, “crab; sign of the zodiac, Cancer.” karkaṭaka-ráṣiya, “sign of the zodiac, Cancer.” karkaṭakaṣṛiṉgi, “medicinal plant, the fruit of which is said to resemble the claws of the crab.” kẹkuḷu, “strong glare; hardness.”
