Turner’s A Comparative Dictionary of the Indo-Aryan Languages says Sanskrit word karkaśá means “rough and hard.” He also provides the cognates of karkaśá in other Indo-European languages:
Pali kakkasa-; Prakrit kakkasa-; Hindī kaksī; Aśokan, Dhauli Rock Inscription of Aśoka akhakhase; Phalūṛa khākaš; Nepāli khakār.
All these cognates and the following words related to karkaśá originate from the Tamil root kaṭu (strength).
