Pali assa (10)

In the Pali-English Dictionary, Davids and Stede say Pali word assa means “corner or point.” It is linguistically related to Sanskrit aśra, aśri; Latin acer; and Greek α῎κρος (a῎kros), ὀςύς (osýs). This assa originates from Tamil akku through the transformation of akku > aṡ > áṡri > assa. The following words, related to Pali assa, also originate from Tamil akku.

catur-(r)aṁsa, having four edges, four-edged. catur-(r)assa, four-cornered, quadrangular, regular. catur-(r)assara, with 4 sharp sides. aṁsa, point, corner, edge. aṁsi, a corner, edge. aṭṭha-aṁsa, with eight edges, octagonal, octahedral, implying perfect or divine symmetry, of a diamond. cha-aṁsa and chaḷ-aṁsa, six-cornered.
