Pali akkha (1)

According to Davids and Stede’s Pali-English Dictionary, Pali word akkha refers to “a die.” Its negative form, anakkha, denotes “one who is not a gambler.” It also has cognates in other Indo-European languages with the same or similar meaning. The cognates include akṣa, akṣi in Sanskrit, and oculus, meaning “that which has eyes, i.e., a die,” and ālea (from *asclea), meaning “game at dice” in Latin. This akkha originates from Tamil akku through the transformation of akku > akshá > akkha.
