akku > akṣá in East other Indo-European Languages (8)

     Turner’s A Comparative Dictionary of the Indo-Aryan Languages says Sanskrit word akṣá denotes “a die for gambling, the tree Elaeocarpus ganitrus and its seed (of which rosaries were made and which were used for dice).” He also provides the cognates of akṣá in other East Indo-European languages and dialects:

Pali akkha-; Prakrit akkha-; Nepāli ākh; Old Sinhalese äkä; Modern Sinhalese aka.

All these cognates and the following words related to akṣá originate from the Tamil root akku.

*akṣadāruka, a particular tree. akṣamālā, string of rosary beads. akṣavāṭa- and akṣapāṭa-, wrestling ground. *akṣākāra, shaped like a die. padmākṣa, lotus-seed. rudrākṣa, the tree Elaeocarpus ganitrus.
