        According to Monier-Williams’ A Sanskrit-English Dictionary, Sanskrit word ara means “the spoke or radius of a wheel, the spoke of an altar formed like a wheel, and a spoke of the time wheel.” It traces its origin to the Tamil root ār through the transformation of ār > ṛi > ara. The following words, related to Sanskrit ara, also originate from Tamil ār.

ara(-ghaṭṭa), a wheel or machine for raising water from a well. aram, the spoke of a wheel. ara-ghaṭṭaka, see ara-ghaṭṭa. ara-arântara, the intervals of the spokes. araka, the spoke of a wheel. arin, having spokes or a wheel or discus.
