Pali jānu (3)
According to Davids and Stede’s Pali-English Dictionary, Pali word jānu means “the knee.” It shares etymological relationship with Sanskrit jānu; Greek γόνυ (góny) (knee); Latin genu; Gothic, Old High-German kniu; and English knee. It traces its origin to the Tamil root kaṇu through the transformation of kaṇu > jānu > jānu. The following words, related to Pali jānu, also originate from Tamil kaṇu.
jānu-maṇḍala, “the knee-cap, the knee.” jaṇṇu(ka), “the knee.”
