Pali hanu (4)

According to Davids and Stede’s Pali-English Dictionary, Pali word hanu means “the jaw.” It is etymologically related to Sanskrit hanu; Latin gena; Greek γένυς (génys); Gothic kinnus = German kinn = English chin; and Old-Irish gin. It traces its origin to the Tamil root kaṇu through the transformation of kaṇu > hánu > hanu. The following words, related to Pali hanu, also originate from Tamil kaṇu.

hanu-saṁhanana, “jaw-binding, incantations to bring on dumbness.” hanukā, “the jaw.” hanukā-aṭṭhika, “the jaw bone.”
