irumpu > áyas in other Indo-European Languages (4)

     Turner’s A Comparative Dictionary of the Indo-Aryan Languages says Sanskrit word áyas means “metal and iron.” He also presents the cognates of áyas in other Indo-European languages:

Pali ayō, aya-; Prakrit aya-; Sinhalese ya.

All these cognates and the following words related to áyas originate from Tamil irumpu.

ayaścūrṇa, “powder prepared from iron as a vermifuge.” ayaskāṇḍa, “a quantity of iron, excellent iron.” *ayaskūṭa, “iron hammer.”
