Sanskrit mātṛí (163)

In A Sanskrit-English Dictionary, Monier-Williams says Sanskrit word mātṛí refers to “a mother, any mother (applicable to animals); (dual) father and mother, parents; the earth; a cow; the divine mothers or personified energies of the principal deities; the 8 classes of female ancestors; the name of Lakshmi, of Durgā, of Dākshāyanī in certain places; and air, space.” He also says, rather uncertainly, that mātṛí comes from the root . It has an etymological relationship with other Indo-European languages. It includes Greek µáτηp (mátir), µáτήp (mίtir); Latin mater; Lithuanian mote; Slavonic mati; German muotar, mutter; and English mother. However, it traces its origin to the Tamil root ammā through the transformation of ammā > mātṛí. The following words, related to Sanskrit mātṛí, also originate from Tamil ammā.
