    According to Monier-Williams’ A Sanskrit-English Dictionary, Sanskrit word ambā́ refers to “a mother, good woman; name of Durgā́; name of an Apsaras; name of a daughter of a king of Kāṡi; and name of one of the seven Kṛittikās.” It is linguistically related to German amme, Old German amma, and Them. ammôn, ammûn. It traces its origin to the Tamil root ammā through the transformation of ammā > ambā́. The following words, related to Sanskrit ambā́, also originate from Tamil ammā.
