According to Davids and Stede’s Pali-English Dictionary, Pali word mātar refers to “mother.” It is linguistically related to Sanskrit mātā, mātar°, Avesta mātar, Greek Μήτηρ (mítir) Doric μάτηρ (mátir), Latin māter, Old-Irish māthir, Old High-German muoter, Anglo-Saxon modor; and also, to Greek μήτρα, Latin matrix, Sanskrit mātṛkā, German mieder, and Indo-Germanic *ma. It traces its origin to the Tamil root ammā through the transformation of ammā > mātṛí > mātar. The following words, related to Pali mātar, also originate from Tamil ammā.
