    According to Davids and Stede’s Pali-English Dictionary, an is the form of the negative prefix a. This negative particle an is used before vowels. In certain cases, the negative prefix ana- is used before consonants (e.g., anamatagga and anabhava). They also provide several compound words with the prefix an. However, the numerous words with the prefix an are condensed, and approximately 50 to 60 words are given below for reference. These compound words with the prefix an originate from the Tamil root al through the transformation of al > a > an > an.
