Sinhalese átmaya (8)

    According to Clough’s Sinhala English Dictionary, Sinhalese word átmaya means “soul; understanding, intellect; mind or faculty of reason; life, spirit, animated frame, vivifying soul in opposition to the sentient; self, and abstract individuality.” It traces its origin to the Tamil root ātaṉ through the transformation of ātaṉ > ātmán > átmaya. átmaja, son, daughter. átmabhú, name of Káma the god of love. átmárthaya, self-interest, one’s own good. átmánudṛishṭiya, experience. mahatmayá, one of great soul, the noble minded one, one who is magnanimous; term of respect, equivalent to the English Mr. áddhyátma, inner man, soul or seat of intelligence. áddhyátmika, internal, mental.
