According to Davids and Stede’s Pali-English Dictionary, Pali word atta denotes “soul; oneself, himself, and yourself.” It is linguistically related to Sanskrit atta; Greek αἀνεμος (aanemos); Latin animus; Greek ἀτμός (atmós); Old High-German ātum; and Anglo-Saxon aepm. It traces its origin to the Tamil root ātaṉ through the transformation of ātaṉ > ātmán > atta. The following words, related to Pali atta, also originate from Tamil ātaṉ.
