ātaṉ > ātmán in other East Indo-European Languages (4)

   Turner’s A Comparative Dictionary of the Indo-Aryan Languages says Sanskrit word ātmán means “breath, soul, and self.”

*ātmadhanika, “master of oneself”; Old Gujarātī āpahaṇī; Gujarātī āphaṇie.

ātmabhāva, existence of the soul; Pali attabhāva-; Sinhalese atbava.

mahātman, “high-minded”; Pali mahattā; West Pahāṛī and Rohruī (dialect of West Pahāṛī) māto; Sinhalese mahatā.

The above cognates and the words related to ātmán originate from the Tamil root ātaṉ.
