Sinhalese úrdhwa (16)

     According to Clough’s Sinhala English Dictionary, Sinhalese word úrdhwa means “high, above, upper, and uppermost.” It traces its origin to the Tamil root uṟu through the transformation of uṟu > ūrdhvá > úrdhwa. The following words, related to Sinhalese úrdhwa, also originate from the Tamil root uṟu.

uḍa, “above, higher up, upwards, over, above the head.” uḍagannawá, “to lift up, to take up.” uḍaṉgu, “high, exalted, haughty, arrogant, proud.” uḍaṉgukama, “pride, haughtiness, arrogance, height.” uḍat, “above; the upper end.” uḍin, “above, higher, over.” uḍu, “a constellation, plough; riches; high.” uḍutalla, “roof of the mouth, palate.” uḍutola, “upper lip.” uḍubẹlmen, “with the face upwards, prone.” uḍumahale, “floor of an upper room, upstair.” uḍumiyáwenewá, “to raise the head to look at anything.” úrdhwakáya, “part from the waist upwards.” úrdhwaṣwása, “(úrdhwa up, breathing) difficulty of breathing; rattling in the throat which precedes death.” úrdhwágra, “top-end.”
