Sanskrit rai (1)

According to Monier-Williams’ A Sanskrit-English Dictionary, Sanskrit word rai is derived from the root rai connoting “to bark and bark at.” The word rai means “barking, sound, and noise.” The root rai is linguistically related to Latin latrare; Lithuanian rĕti, lóti; Slavonic lajati; and Gothic laian. However, Sanskrit word rai traces its origin to the Tamil root uraṟu . This uraṟu changes into rai in Sanskrit through the transformation of uraṟu > rai.
