Pali ukkā (5)
According to Davids and Stede’s Pali-English Dictionary, Pali word ukkā means “firebrand, glow of fire; a furnace or forge of a smith; and a meteor.” It is etymologically related to the other Indo-European languages. The etymologically related words include Vedic ulkā and ulkuṣī, Greek α῎ϕλας (a῎flas), Latin Volcanus, Old-Irish Olcān, and Indo-Germanic *ṷI̊q (to be fiery). However, ukkā traces its origin to the Tamil root ulai through the transformation of ul > ulai > ulkā́ > ukkā. The following words, related to Pali ukkā, also originate from Tamil ulai.
ukkā-dhāra, “a torch-bearer.” ukkā-pāta, “falling of a firebrand, a meteor.” ukkā-mukha, “the opening or receiver of a furnace, a goldsmith's smelting pot.” tiṇukkā, “firebrand of dry grass.”
