ōlam > úlūka in other Indo-European Languages (2)
Turner’s A Comparative Dictionary of the Indo-Aryan Languages says Sanskrit word úlūka refers to an “owl.” He also sets forth cognates of úlūka in other Indo-European languages and dialect:
Prakrit ulūa-, uluya-, koṁḍhullu-; Lahndā ullū̃; Panjābī ullū; Kumaunī ulū; Nepāli ullu; Assamese uluwā-phẽsā; Oṛiyā ulu; Hindī ulwā, uruā, ullū, ulū; Gujarātī and Marāṭhī ullū; West Pahāṛī and Bhalesī (dialect of West Pahāṛī) bullū.
All these cognates and the following word related to úlūka originate from the Tamil root ōlam.
ululí, “crying aloud.”
