Clough’s Sinhala English Dictionary says Sinhalese word am̱bu means “water.” It traces its origin to the Tamil root ampu through the transformation of ampu > ámbu > am̱bu. The following words, related to Sinhalese am̱bu, also originate from Tamil ampu.
