Sanskrit sahásra (57)
According to Monier-Williams’ A Sanskrit-English Dictionary, Sanskrit word sahásra means “a thousand.” It is linguistically related to Greek χίλιοι (chílioi) for χεσλοι (chesloi), and Persian hazār. However, it traces its origin to the Tamil root āyiram, and due to the a > ya > ca phonetic change, āyiram transforms into sahásra in Sanskrit (āyira > yāyira > cāyira > cācira > sahásra). The following words, related to Sanskrit sahásra, also originate from Tamil āyiram.
