According to Monier-Williams’ A Sanskrit-English Dictionary, vasantá denotes “spring” derived from the root vas connoting “to shine, grow bright, to bestow by shining upon, to drive away by shining, and to cause to shine.” It traces its origin to the Tamil root uṇṇam through the transformation of uṇṇam > vas > vasantá. The following words, related to Sanskrit vasantá, also originate from Tamil uṇṇam.
