Pali uṇha (10)

According to Davids and Stede’s Pali-English Dictionary, Pali word uṇha means “hot.” It is linguistically related to Sanskrit uṣṇa; Latin ustus, uro; Anglo-Saxon ysla; Lithuanian usnis; and Greek εὕω (évo). It traces its origin to the Tamil root uṇṇam through the transformation of uṇṇam > ush > ushṇá > uṇha. The following words, related to Pali uṇha, also originate from Tamil uṇṇam.

uṇhaṁ lohitaṁ chaḍḍeti, “to spill hot blood.” uṇhaṁ-ākāra, “appearance of heat.” uṇhaṁ-odaka, “hot water.” uṇhaṁ-kalla, “glowing hot embers or ashes.” uṇhaṁ-kāla, “hot weather.” uṇhatta, “hot state, heat.” usumā, “heat.” usmā, “heat.” uṇhaṁ-gata, “heated, belonging to heat.”
