Pali ulūka (3)
According to Davids and Stede’s Pali-English Dictionary, Pali word ulūka means “an owl.” It shares etymological relationship with Sanskrit ulūka; Latin ulucus, ulula, ululāre; German uhu and is onomatopoeically related to *ul, as in Greek ὀλολύζω (ololýzo); Sanskrit ululi; Lithuanian ulůti. It traces its origin to the Tamil root ōlam through the transformation of ōlam > úlūka > ulūka. The following words, related to Pali ulūka, also originate from Tamil ōlam.
ulúka-pakkha, “owls’ wings.” ulúka-pakkhika, “dress of owls’ wings, or owl feathers.”
