Pali hima (9)
According to Davids and Stede’s Pali-English Dictionary, Pali word hima means “cold, frosty, ice, and snow.” It is linguistically related to terms in other Indo-European languages, such as the Greek ξειμών (xeimón), ξιών (xión); the Avestan Ǥaya (winter); and the Latin hiems (winter). It traces its origin to the Tamil root imai through the transformation of imai > cimai > himá > hima. The following words, related to Pali hima, also originate from the Tamil root imai.
hima-pāta-samaya, “the season of snow fall.” hima-vāta, “a snow or ice wind.” himavant, “snowy.” himavā, “the Himālaya.” hemanta, “winter.” hemantika, “destined for the winter, wintry, icy cold.” hemavataka, “belonging to or living in the Himalaya.” hemavatika, see hemavataka.
