Sinhalese pitá (23)
According to Clough’s Sinhala English Dictionary, Sinhalese word pitṛi means “father; paternal ancestor; manes of a deceased ancestor.” It is an offshoot of the Tamil root appā through the transformation of appā > pitṛί > pitá. The following words, related to Sinhalese pitá, also originate from Tamil appā.
pitá, father. piyá, father; wing or feather of a bird. piyánandẹ́ and piyánó, father; (terms of more respect than piyá.) pitá-maha, (great) grandfather, paternal grandfather; name of Brahma, alluding to his being the father of all. pitṛika, paternal, relating or belonging to a parent or progenitor. pitṛikánana, (father, wood) cemetery. pitṛighátaka, parricide. pitṛi-tarpaṇa, offering to or in honour of deceased ancestors. pitṛi-dána, offerings to the manes of deceased ancestors. pitṛi-pati, (deceased ancestors, lord) name of Yama, regent of the dead. pitṛi-pitṛi, paternal grandfather. pitṛiwya, paternal uncle. pitṛi-wadha, one of the five heinous crimes, parricide. pitṛi-wana, cemetery, place where dead bodies are buried or burnt. bapa, name of Buddha; tears; father. bap, see bapa. appachchi, see appajjá. appajjá, word for father, used only amongst the low caste or caste of tom tom beaters. appá, father, (not very respectable). appochchi, father, (more respectable word than appá).
