According to Davids and Stede’s Pali-English Dictionary, ambu means “water.” It is etymologically related to other Indo-European languages. It includes Sanskrit ámbu, Latin imber, Sanskrit abhra, and Greek ἀϕρός (afrós). It traces its origin to the Tamil root ampu through the transformation of ampu > ámbu > ambu. The following words, related to Pali ambu, also originate from Tamil ampu.
