     Turner’s A Comparative Dictionary of the East Indo-Aryan Languages says Sanskrit word áp means “water.” He also lists the cognates of áp in other East Indo-European languages:

Pali āpō, āpa-; Prakrit āu-; Ashkun abṓ, ābu; Kati ā́wə; Waigāli Āw; Prasun ā́wə; Dameli âu; Gawar-Bati aṷ; Bihāri āpā; Panjābī accharā̃; Old Awadhī āchari; Marāṭhī āsre; Gujarātī dīv.

All these cognates and the following words related to Sanskrit áp originate from the Tamil root ampu.
